A Day in My Childhood: A Poem

“Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.” — Chili Davis

I don’t want to go to school,
But I want to see my friends
only they believe I’m kinda cool
and we hope it never ends

We choose our seats together
passing notes around the table
we play outside no matter the weather
as long as the teacher says we are able

The same five guys
shooting some hoops
with wandering eyes
on the girls’ hula hoops

When the final bell sounds
we all get in line
the bus comes around
to the afterschool program, we fly

I draw comics for fun
my five guys surround me
we say goodbye to the sun
and the whole gym is free

we shoot some more hoops
tease some more girls
they give us the scoop
on whose who in our world

my guys would go home
but I’ve got my books
sometimes last to go home
but now I write books

at home there is love
and food on the table
give thanks up above
end the night with a fable

I am grateful to remember the happy times in the past rather than the negative memories. They are there if you look for them and it will brighten your day.
